Georgetown University’s Beeck Center Expands Team; Obama Administration Top Official Carlos Monje Jr. Joins as Senior Fellow

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 22, 2017) The Beeck Center for Social Impact + Innovation at Georgetown University is proud to announce and welcome Carlos Monje Jr. as the Center’s Senior Fellow for Policy Innovation. In this capacity, Monje will provide thought leadership and expertise to Beeck Center staff on issues related to policy innovation, transportation, infrastructure and social innovation. Monje will also offer his expertise to Georgetown University students, leading a three-part seminar series beginning today, March 22,  “Political and Practical Barriers to Data-Driven Governance.” This series will explore the nature of Presidential Transitions, taking a deep dive into key challenges while sharing insights from his experience as a top official in the Obama Administration.

Carlos most recently led planning efforts for a top-to-bottom review of the federal government for the Clinton-Kaine Transition Team. He previously served as Acting Under Secretary and Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy for the U.S. Department of Transportation.  He oversaw implementation of surface transportation programs, the TIGER discretionary grant program, and efforts to promote equity and economic development.

Monje was previously Special Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff of the White House Domestic Policy Council, where he helped oversee all aspects of policy, message and event development across a wide spectrum of domestic policy issues, including disaster recovery, veterans affairs, and national service issues.  He also was a founding staffer of the White House Office of Social Innovation, where he oversaw efforts to pass and implement the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act.

Monje also served as deputy policy director at Obama for America and a special assistant in President Obama’s DC Senate office where he handled homeland security and veterans affairs. He previously worked as a policy and press aide in the United States Senate and on a number of federal and statewide electoral campaigns. He holds a B.A. from Harvard University

“I am thrilled to join the Beeck Center and have the unique opportunity to work with and mentor Georgetown’s incredible students,” said Monje. Sonal Shah, Beeck Center Executive Director, states, “We are very excited to welcome Carlos to our growing team. As one of the country’s leading experts on policy innovation, particularly related to the transportation sector, Carlos will greatly advance our thinking and research is this area. We are especially excited to offer Carlos as a resource to our students through the three-part Spring Semester Seminar that he will be leading. We are grateful and excited to share his expertise with the entire Georgetown community.”
