What is your assigned location and what makes you excited about it?
I will be working with El Nido Resorts (ENR) in the Philippines. My excitement lies in anticipation of what I will learn. I look forward to building upon my interest in Southeast Asian studies and my passion for environmental conservation. I am excited to serve ENR in whichever capacity I can. Needless to say, I am also thrilled by the idea of living 10 weeks in such a naturally beautiful area. And, having never visited the Philippines, I am ready to broaden my worldview to better understand yet another culture of our dynamic world.
What does social impact mean to you in your experiences?
Social impact is the implementation of comprehensive action leading to outcomes that have the capability of supporting themselves over extended periods of time. In other words, social impact can only be considered successful when it is self-supported by a basis of thorough forethought. It is necessary to take the time to listen for, study, and address the apparent needs of the community.
How do you hope to grow through GU Impacts?
I hope, first and foremost, to gain the experience of working with a for-profit company focused on environmental conservation and community engagement. The knowledge and action I expect to be exposed to may help me better understand the values I hold dear. And, the time spent in the Philippines will add another layer to my understanding of international relations and cross cultural communications, which I find so important to living life as an student of foreign service.
Why did you decide to apply to GU Impacts?
I wanted to expand my studies beyond the classroom and beyond Georgetown’s campus. There is a world of experience to learn from that cannot be captured on the pages of a book. Furthermore, I was drawn to GU Impacts by the opportunity to meet and work with other like minded peers.
What do you think makes GU Impacts different from other service programs at Georgetown?
GU Impacts is one of the most holistic service programs I have ever encountered. The programs aims to service the global community through an extraordinary pool of partner companies with the help of eager students. The group of students working with GU Impacts is then provided with the encouragement of both the Beeck Center and their assigned organizations. GU Impacts is invested in helping all parties involved: global community, partnering organizations, Georgetown community, and partnering students. The multifaceted approach to service implementation allows for the most effective and comprehensive social impact generator with which I have ever worked.
