Working at the Beeck Center

Do I have to live in Washington, D.C.?

The Beeck Center operates as a distributed team, with some positions designated as remote and others as hybrid, working in our Washington, D.C. offices. Each role will be clearly designated as either fully remote or hybrid in the job description.

A hybrid designation means that a position is based out of our Washington, D.C. offices and is expected to work in person two (2) days per week. Typically, in-person days are based out of our office on Georgetown University’s Capitol Campus at 500 1st St. NW on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and occasionally (~once per month) will work out of our offices at the Hilltop Campus. We prioritize in-person collaboration and building relationships with our Student Analysts, other centers on campus, and each other!

A position’s location status will be clearly designated in the job description and is not eligible for negotiation.

What are the work eligibility requirements?

Beeck Center positions are based in the United States, including remote employees. In compliance with federal law, all individuals hired must verify their identity and eligibility to work in the U.S. and complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. We encourage individuals with residency or green cards to apply!

Most Beeck Center positions are not eligible for employer-provided visa sponsorship, including visas that are currently sponsored but will require a future sponsorship renewal.

Does the Beeck Center offer relocation assistance?

The Beeck Center does not offer relocation assistance packages.

How does the Beeck Center facilitate remote collaboration?

With our team distributed nationwide, the Beeck Center heavily relies on many tools for remote collaboration: Slack for communication, Google Suite/Drive for email and file creation and storage, Asana for asynchronous project management, Zoom for video conferencing, Airtable for data management, and Sugar for CRM, just to name a few! Teams may use each of these—and others— in ways that best suit their specific needs and styles.

While we can’t exactly replicate traditional office life online, we make the most of our in-person time and provide regular opportunities for project updates, collaboration, and team bonding. The Beeck Center hosts at least one All Hands meeting per month, where we celebrate birthdays, promotions, and jobs well done, share centerwide updates, and present key projects. These meetings foster a broader understanding of all of our work and help us connect across teams.

Do Beeck Center staff meet in person?

Yes! Beeck Center staff gather twice a year for full staff retreats, and projects also occasionally schedule team-specific convenings. At retreats, we prioritize team bonding and center-wide knowledge-sharing activities, like strategic planning. Additionally, many team members attend position-specific conferences, convenings, or networking events together.

What are the Beeck Center’s regular business hours?

General business hours are 9:00am – 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, for both remote and hybrid employees, in their local time zone. Some folks start a little earlier or end a little later to account for personal needs and preferred working schedules. During these hours, Beeck Center staff are expected to be online and available for meetings unless otherwise discussed with their supervisor. To accommodate our distributed team across several time zones, we aim to schedule core meetings between 12:00pm – 5:00pm ET / 9:00am – 2:00pm PT.

What sort of training does the Beeck Center provide for new team members?

Every new team member will go through onboarding during their first few days at the Beeck Center. This includes Beeck Center-specific orientation to familiarize you with our work and University sessions on things like HR policies and benefits. Individual teams will also provide training and resources tailored to new employees.

We intentionally keep the workload light during the first week or two. We see the investment in our team members as a mutual and sustainable one. As such, we want to make sure you have the time and space to really dig deep and familiarize yourself with the new position and the Beeck Center while also not overwhelming you with the shock that comes with a new job and workplace!

In addition to initial training, the Beeck Center is committed to ongoing professional development through staff-wide learning and development opportunities, position-specific upskilling, and individual professional development plans.

What does being a “term” employee mean?

All full-time employees of the Beeck Center are categorized as “term employees” by Georgetown University. This classification is due to the fact that the Beeck Center is fully funded through external funding sources and is responsible for securing funding to sustain positions within our department.

Typically employment terms are set for two years, but may vary depending on the role and are likely to be eligible for renewal. The Beeck Center is committed to transparency and will be in proactive communication with employees regarding eligibility for renewal.

What happens at the end of the employment term?

As a term end date approaches, we revisit the nature and future of the position. If there is an ongoing need and available funding, the term will be renewed.

If there is a reason for the position not to be extended past its term—whether the end of a project or a lack of funding—the position concludes at the end of its term. In such cases, the Beeck Center commits to providing a minimum of 90 days of notice to the employee.

What benefits does the Beeck Center offer?

All full-time Beeck Center employees have access to the full package of benefits available to all Georgetown University employees. You can find information about these benefits here.

For part-time or temporary hires, the Beeck Center will provide clarity on benefits offerings for those roles in partnership with a third-party hiring team within the job posting.

Application Process

How does the application process work?

As a reflection of the Beeck Center’s values, our application process is intentionally structured to optimize equity and transparency for applicants and candidates.

  • Before applying, we provide candidates with the position description, requirements, salary band, and interview structure.
  • During the interview process, we standardize scripts and evaluation rubrics to ensure consistency across all candidates, and structure interview panels to be as representative as possible across identity groups, positions, and seniority in the Beeck Center.
  • We publish recruitment process timelines with each job posting and strive to stick to them.
  • We communicate with candidates to provide timely updates on their place in our process and provide clarity if we have any delays or pivots from our original timeline.

The application process typically consists of the following steps:

  • Resume, application form, screening questions: Candidates submit an online application (resume, 3-4 short answer questions) to the Beeck Center and similar information (resume, demographic questions) to Georgetown University’s candidate portal. A cover letter is not required.
  • First round interview: Usually a 45-minute Zoom video interview with ~2 Beeck Center employees who will interact with this position. They will ask you 6-8 questions, reserving time for you to ask questions, too.
  • Second round interview: Usually a 60-minute Zoom video interview with ~2-3 Beeck Center employees who will interact with this position, including the supervisor for this position. Similar to the first round, they will ask you 6-8 questions, reserving time for you to ask questions, too.
    • For some positions, candidates will complete an at-home exercise related to the role. These assignments are designed to take 1.5-2 hours, and candidates have several days to prepare and submit them before the interview. Any exercise is solely for the hiring process and will never be used by the Beeck Center for any other purpose.
    • For hybrid positions, we may arrange for the interviews to take place in-person at our office, to allow candidates to familiarize themselves with our in-person work environment.
  • Reference check: We will request 2-3 professional references, usually seeking at least one from a current or former supervisor and one from a current or former direct report (if applying for a supervisory role).

Can I apply to multiple positions?

Yes, please do! If you want to apply for multiple positions, submit separate applications for each one. Although some of your materials may be similar, certain application questions are specific to each position, and we organize candidate information in distinct pools. We may also suggest other positions that could be a better fit for you and encourage you to apply. In fact, some Beeck Center staff have been hired this way!

Does the Beeck Center team offer informational interviews about open positions?

The Beeck Center does not offer informational interviews to candidates. We strive for transparency about our open positions and organization, which is why we’ve created this FAQ page to share information equally with all applicants. This approach helps avoid bias and any unfair advantages that may be introduced during individual information interviews. During the interview process, candidates will also have the opportunity to ask any remaining questions.

Can I email my resume to the Beeck Center instead of applying?

To be considered as a candidate, you must submit a complete application using the forms listed in each job posting. This ensures your information is saved in our applicant database and can be consistently compared with other candidates. Applications that do not follow this process will be considered incomplete and not considered for the position.

What is the application deadline?

Complete interview process timelines—including application deadlines—are available at the bottom of each job posting.

What is the hiring timeline?

Beeck Center positions are typically open for applications for 3-4 weeks. After the application deadline, the interview process outlined above usually takes about one month, though it may vary slightly by position.

Will the Beeck Center negotiate salary offers?

We strive for transparency in our recruitment process and purposefully list salary ranges in all job postings, ensuring candidates can evaluate the alignment of their requirements before investing time and effort into the application process.

If you receive an offer from the Beeck Center, we are open to negotiating within the listed range. For reasons mentioned here, as well as University compliance/approval, we cannot negotiate above the publicly listed range for each position. Additionally, we cannot negotiate other terms of the offer, such as location, remote status, or work schedule.

How will I know if I’m moving forward or being declined from a recruitment process?

You will always hear from the Beeck Center about the status of your candidacy—one way or another. We aim to stick to our original timeline, communicating when we need to change the schedule. It is also possible that our emails went to your spam folder, so please be sure to check there regularly during the application process.
