Job Overview

At the Beeck Center for Social Impact + Innovation at Georgetown University, Innovation and Incubation (I+I) Fellows are leading experts who pilot new and emerging projects and initiatives. I+I Fellows are instrumental in driving the Center’s mission to address complex societal challenges through innovative solutions. The AI Fellow will be pivotal in shaping the future of the Center’s AI-focused initiatives.

With a primary focus on identifying and analyzing emerging AI trends and providing advisory services for our projects, the Fellow will provide invaluable subject matter expertise to the Center and its partners. Collaborating closely with Beeck Center leadership, as well as government and nonprofit entities, the AI Fellow will be instrumental in advising the development and scaling of new AI projects. These initiatives will be focused on  enhancing government digital services, talent development, public services and benefits delivery, technology, and data management, ultimately driving positive social impact. The Fellow will document their work and disseminate their learnings through written and verbal communication channels, culminating in a final report at the conclusion of the position’s one-year term. 

The Fellow will innovate, explore new ideas, and forge strategic partnerships to advance the Beeck Center’s mission. The Fellow will also serve as a Beeck Center AI expert representative and liaison for external conferences, roundtables, and meetings. Additionally, the Fellow will contribute to thought leadership, both within the Beeck Center and the broader civic tech and social impact community, helping shape the conversation around AI.

The ideal candidate for this role is a visionary leader with a deep understanding of AI technologies, their intersection with government, and their implications for society. They should possess a track record of success in building and driving innovative projects, a collaborative mindset, as well as a strong commitment to advancing equitable social change.

Work Interactions

Innovation and Incubation Fellows are leading experts who drive new and emerging projects and initiatives at the Beeck Center. The Fellow will report to the Executive Director, Lynn Overmann, and work closely with the Director of Strategic Initiatives, Grace Lacy-Hansell, as well as the I+I Program Manager, Zenzele Best. The Fellow may have support from a part-time Student Analyst. The Fellow will represent the Beeck Center and Georgetown University when speaking publicly about their work. 

They will also collaborate with other Beeck Center project teams. All project teams receive support from Beeck Center staff to ensure strategic goals are being met, including operational, communications, and student engagement support. The Fellow is also expected to contribute to limited operational activities such as grant reporting and fundraising. 

Distributed Working Environment

The Beeck Center operates as a distributed team, with some team members working remotely and others working in-person in our Washington, DC offices. A distributed team means there will be heavy reliance on asynchronous communication channels such as Slack, Asana, and Gmail while also having many meetings fully virtual or hybrid to include remote employees, using Zoom.

This position has been designated as remote. Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University. The Beeck Center has two office spaces in Washington, D.C.: one on Georgetown University’s Main Campus and a second downtown on Georgetown’s Capitol Campus. We prioritize spending time in person with our student analysts for collaboration and career development as well as building relations across the various other centers on campus. Remote employees will have the opportunity and are expected to travel up to 10% for team retreats, conferences and in-person work weeks. We encourage D.C.-based remote employees to utilize our office spaces and attend in-person events periodically.

Responsibilities

The AI Innovation and Incubation Fellow will be responsible for:

Thought Leadership, Research, Project Advising, and Publishing – 80%

  • Lead the Beeck Center’s exploration, identification, and dissemination of emerging AI trends and technologies related to our work. 
  • Provide subject matter expertise on AI, including ethics, governance, and technical aspects to the Beeck Center and its partners (e.g. government agencies, nonprofit partners). 
  • Provide strategic advice to the Beeck Center and its partners on conceptualizing AI initiatives that align with the Center’s mission, focusing on enhancing digital services, talent development, public benefits delivery, government technology, and data management. 
  • Serve as a Beeck Center AI expert representative and liaison for external conferences, roundtables, and meetings. 
  • Act as a thought leader on AI within the Beeck Center and the broader social impact community, contributing through writing, publishing, speaking engagements, and cultivating meaningful relationships.
  • Produce a comprehensive report documenting findings, best practices, and lessons learned during the Fellowship term. 

Supervision and Mentorship – 20%

  • Mentor and supervise Georgetown students and other team members, ensuring high-quality work and professional development.
  • Contribute to Beeck Center educational activities such as hosting presentations and workshops for students and staff members to share skills and learnings from their research. 
  • Attend Center-wide gatherings including monthly virtual all-hands meetings and two in-person weeks per year.

Qualifications

Candidates for this position must have:

  • 15 years experience and graduate degree or equivalent expertise in Public Policy, Social Sciences, Public Administration, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in research, policy analysis, and advocacy, with a focus on AI.
  • Demonstrated expertise in AI, including knowledge of emerging trends, technologies, and best practices, preferably in relation to a government context.
  • Experience working with or in government (local, state, federal), nonprofits, or community organizations.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to translate information into compelling narratives for diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, lead, and manage projects, including coordinating with multiple stakeholders and meeting deadlines.
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring staff and/or students, fostering a collaborative and inclusive team environment.
  • Commitment to driving equitable social change and advancing social impact through the use of data, design, and technology.

Compensation, Benefits, and Employment Term

The Innovation and Incubation Fellow role has a 12-month term. The salary for this position is $130,000-$170,000 annually, commensurate with experience, and includes full benefits.
